Romance
Story Line:
Peralagan tells the story of Chinna(Surya), a crippled with buck-teeth
and somewhat ugly-looking hunchback who runs a telephone booth.
He is loved dearly by the people around him. Kuzhandhai(Vivek)
is a marriage broker and he is Chinna’s best friend. The
hunchback is a typical young man with all the desires that a young
man has. But he is aware of the fact that he is ugly and it is
too difficult for him to impress a beautiful girl. One of the
regular visitors in Chinna’s booth is Priya(Jothika) who
is the daughter of a police officer and she is in love with Karthik(Surya)
who is a boxing champion. As Priya’s father is against their
marriage Priya and Karthik plans to elope and Chinna volunteers
to help them. But on that fateful day a local thug Varadhan, once
affected by Priya’s father interferes and in a fracas Priya
is killed by Varadhan in front of Karthik’s eyes. Chinna
is the eyewitness to this murder and on Chinna’s complaint
Varadhan is arrested. Shenbagam (Jothika) is a blind girl in a
circus troupe which comes to Chinna’s village. When her
brother (Thalaivasal Vijay) dies in an accident Chinna helps her
by giving her a job in the STD booth and slowly he falls in love
with her. He lies to Shenbagam that he is tall, strong and handsome,
but fears a day when she gets back her sight that she might reject
him. Priya’s eyes are donated to Shenbagam and she gets
her sight. The first person she wanted to see after getting her
eye sight is Chinna. She sees Karthik and mistakes him for Chinna
and hugs him. On seeing this Chinna is shattered and he leaves
the village. When Shenbagam comes to know the truth from Kuzhandhai
she waits for him. In the meantime Karthik after knowing that
Priya’s eyes are fixed for Shenbagam disturbs her often.
Whether Chinna comes back and marries Shenbagam or Shenbagam succumbs
to Karthik's overtures forms the rest of the story.
The highlight of the film is Surya in the title role and his performance
as the crippled hunchback is what keeps you firmly seated until
the very end. He is amazing. He makes you laugh and cry at the
same time. What a splendid performance by Surya! The other Surya
as handsome college boy is passable. Jothika sans make-up is good
as Shenbagam while Jothika as Priya too does justice to her role.
Vivek’s rib tickling comedy is terrific. Manorama, Devan,
Kalai Rani, Mano Bala and Manicka Vinayagam’s performances
are adequate. Malavika comes in a sort of an ‘item number’.
Debut director Sasi Shankar (director of original version) has
given a neat entertaining film without double meaning dialogues
or brutality. Rathnavel’s cinematography captures the beautiful
locales of Kerala and worth mentioning especially in the duet
song of Karthik and Priya. For the first time a full song has
been picturised in laser lights. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is
just ok. Make up by Bujji Babu deserves special mention.
